Our guest on the GeekWire radio show this week is Chad Copeland, an adventure and natural history photographer and videographer who uses unmanned aerial systems — a.k.a. drones — to capture pictures and videos that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

Copeland, a contributor to National Geographic, Men’s Journal and other publications, is a former military pilot and commercial air traffic controller who takes us inside the world of drones to explain how they’ve shaped his approach to photography and videography.

Our radio conversation with Copeland begins at 8:15 in the audio player below, following our weekly news roundup. This extended podcast version of the show features a bonus segment with Copeland, including his thoughts on Amazon’s prospects with its delivery drones.

This is a preview of one of the sessions at the GeekWire Summit, Oct. 2 in downtown Seattle, where Copeland will be joining Chris Anderson, the drone entrepreneur and former WIRED editor, for a discussion about the long-term potential for drones in the technology world and beyond.

Also check out Copeland’s site for more of his work, including stories created using the Steller app. Here’s a video from some of Copeland’s assignments, shot on location in California, Hawaii and Iceland. See more on his Vimeo channel.
