Ugly sweaters and pampered tech geeks, oh my!
The GeekWire Gala — our festive holiday party taking place Thursday, Dec. 6th at the Showbox Market — will have food, drink, a KEXP DJ and a great cross-section of the Seattle tech community. But there’s also some unique fashion fun in store, too. And you can get involved.
Now is the time to enter the official GeekWire Gala Ugly Sweater contest or Geek Style Reboot day of pampering. This is your rare chance to get pampered, or take home some awesome prizes.
If you are in need of a refresh or just want to bust out an ugly sweater from the closet, take a look at how to enter both of these fun activities below:
GEEK STYLE REBOOT
For the second year in a row, we’re picking two GeekWire readers to participate in the Geek Style Reboot, presented by Nordstrom.
Here’s how this will work: Two lucky geeks — one man, one woman — will get treated to an amazing day of pampering on Thursday, Dec. 6, in advance of our GeekWire Gala at the Showbox Market in downtown Seattle. (Tickets on sale here!)
The two winners will spend a half day at the downtown Seattle Nordstrom store, grabbing lunch, hitting the spa and meeting with personal stylists and beauty consultants who will select special outfits for them to wear to that evening’s Gala and get them prepped for the big night. (The winners will keep the outfit, which will be provided by Nordstrom).
“The inaugural Geekwire Geek Style Reboot allowed me to see that there’s more to life than my usual ill-fitting faded slacks and a plaid snap-front short sleeve shirt,” said past winner Daniel Robbins, a designer at HTC who said he’s returned to his personal stylist at Nordstrom several times. “It’s easy to be complacent in how we look. It’s easy for one day to slack into the next. But please, take a few moments, look at yourself, and ask, can’t I feel special?”

If interested, please fill out the below questions, and email your nominations to events@geekwire.com with the subject line “I need a Geek Style Reboot.“ Here’s what we need from you:
- Submit your geekiest photo(s).
- Describe why you’re the hardest working geek in town, and need a day of pampering.
- Who’s your style icon — real or imaginary?
- What’s your favorite work uniform? Please send us a photo of your go-to outfit. Whether it’s jeans and a hoodie or a tailored suit, let us know!
- Describe Seattle style.
- What’s your favorite accessory?
- Company and job title.
Please note: The two winners of this once-in-a-lifetime pampering experience will need to be available from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, and must be comfortable with a GeekWire reporter and videographer covering aspects of the fashion and styling reboot. The winners will each receive two complimentary tickets to the Gala, and be asked to come on stage, so the more than 800 party-goers can see the reboot first hand.
UGLY SWEATER COMPETITION
Now, it’s also time for our inaugural “Ugly Sweater” contest, presented by our partners at The University of Washington’s Foster School of Business Master of Science in Information Systems.
Here’s how this will work. Snap a photo of yourself — donning your ugliest sweater getup — and send to us at events@geekwire.com with your name, occupation and inspiration for the especially unpleasant duds. And then post that photo and description to Twitter with the #GeekWireUglySweater.
From the pool of submissions, we will select three finalists who will be asked to come on stage in their ugly sweater at the GeekWire Gala on the evening of Dec. 6th, with the audience helping to choose the ultimate winner. Each finalist will receive two free tickets to the Gala, and the winner will walk away with geeky bragging rights and a fun prize package.
So, what are you waiting for? Jump into your closet, and bust out the ugliest stuff you’ve got. You can do better than this, right?
