Apple is holding a press event at its campus in Cupertino, California tomorrow, and it’s slated to be a significant event for fans of the company’s products. This won’t be a blockbuster like last month’s iPhone and Apple Watch event, but people who are on the hunt for new iPads and Macs have a lot to look forward to.

Here’s what to expect when the company’s executives take the stage at 10 a.m.

New iPads

ipadoct13Thanks to a mix-up on Apple’s part that pushed images of the new devices to the iTunes Store, we know that the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 will be coming tomorrow. That isn’t too much of a surprise: Apple was due for its annual tablet refresh, and the company usually does them in October.

The features included on the devices aren’t all that surprising either: the new iPads will feature Touch ID fingerprint sensors, and the iPad Air will sport a new iSight rear-facing camera. The case of each device won’t be updated, which is in keeping with Apple’s pattern of re-using the same cases for a couple of years before refreshing the form factors.

People who want a tablet that matches their gold iPhones may be in luck as well. There are a number of rumors pointing to the existence of gold iPads, and it would make sense for Apple to offer a new color selection this year.

There have been some rumblings about the existence of a 12-inch iPad targeted at professionals, but I haven’t seen the sort of supply chain leaks to indicate that it would be coming out this month.

It’s possible that Apple could announce such a device (perhaps call it the iPad Plus?) at tomorrow’s event and wait to release it until next year like what it did with the Apple Watch, though that seems unlikely, given the relative paucity of rumors about it.

New Macs

iMac27_iMac21_Photos_PRINTIt’s been a long time since Apple really updated several of its Mac product lines. The Mac Mini is hungry for an update, and several other form factors have received performance bumps in the past year, but not much else.

Tomorrow’s going to be different, according to all the rumors. Apple is slated to announce new iMacs equipped with Retina displays, to match the Retina-equipped MacBook Pros that the company already has out on the market. I know there are a number of Mac Mini fans who are pulling for Apple to release a new version of its budget desktop, though it’s not clear whether the company has any plans to do so.

There have also been rumblings about a Retina display-equipped MacBook Air, but it doesn’t seem like that product will be making an appearance tomorrow, Based on recent reports. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple also announced an additional performance bump for one of its laptop lines, especially since Intel’s new Broadwell chips are finally available.

OS X Yosemite

YosemiteBetaApple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi will be bringing his comedy stylings back to Apple’s stage to announce the availability of OS X Yosemite, the company’s latest update to the operating system that powers all modern Macintoshes.

The company first unveiled the update at its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco last June, and Yosemite has since been in beta testing with both developers and a select group of consumers.

The update brings with it a variety of changes, including a fresh design that’s more in line with the style introduced to iPhones and iPads with IOS 7. In addition, it also contains new Continuity features that are designed to make Macs and iOS devices work better together. Thanks to the new update, Mac users will be able to make and receive phone calls on their Mac when it’s connected to their iPhone, and easily share what they’re doing between devices.

If this year is anything like last year, Apple will release the new OS that afternoon for download through the Mac App Store. Ever since last year, the company committed to making its Mac OS updates free, so people will be able to pick it up whenever they want.

All in all, this isn’t going to be an event that sets the world on fire. The Apple faithful will probably get excited by all the shiny new things, but I don’t think any of tomorrow’s announcements will be earthshattering in the same way last month’s were.
