The University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory was established in the 1940’s to support the U.S. Navy with technology. Today, the lab is helping support the cutting-edge underwater ocean observatory off the Washington and Oregon coasts, and it’s looking for a software engineer to help in that mission.

The observatory gives scientists, students and the general public access to real-time data and video from nodes of sensors off the coasts of Washington and Oregon, all transmitted via the internet. The sensors are scattered across the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate and are important for our understanding of the environment.

The engineer will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the software applications used to control and monitor the system’s infrastructure and will also create new interfaces for controlling and ingesting data from new instruments are they are added.

They will also help support operations and annual summer field maintenance, both at the UW campus and other locations, including “at sea.”
