LAS VEGAS — Last week, I got to experience something I never thought possible as a woman: sex from the male perspective.

The future is here, my friends. And though it was an interesting anthropological experiment, it was not particularly sexy to look down and see … that.

But that’s what I saw, courtesy of Naughty America at CES in Las Vegas. The company was tucked away in a sad meeting room off the show floor, reminiscent of a glass smoking room at the airport, as if to send a message. Keep the animals in their cage.

There, several cocktail tables held VR headsets and headphones where visitors who managed to track down the meeting room could watch a four-minute compilation of various sex scenes. CES has some strict rules about adult content and a long, complicated history with the sex industry, but Naughty America was able to skirt them by jumping through some hoops.

In the video below, I’m watching a vanilla oral sex scene, a physical trainer scenario, and a high-class orgy that’s a clear homage to Eyes Wide Shut.

All of the scenes depicted heterosexual sex from the male point of view. To put it bluntly, I saw a penis when I looked down with one or more women bouncing around on it. All of the porn stars were white.

Naughty America CIO Ian Paul relied on a familiar refrain to explain why there were no scenes from the female perspective to demo: Women are just too complicated, apparently.

“Female sexuality is a lot more complicated than male sexuality, so it’s going to take us a lot more time to refine that,” he said.

Naughty America does have some female POV films but, for whatever reason, they aren’t fit for public consumption. There’s no release date on the horizon for those films, according to Paul.

“As men for us to say that this is what women want from a female perspective would not really be the best thing to do, so we’re trying to get feedback from women to make those videos better and better.”

From this woman’s perspective, (even as a man) it’s obvious why there is a big market for VR porn. The biggest limitation of traditional adult film is, at best, it’s a voyeuristic experience. In virtual reality, the viewer gets to be (almost) a participant for the first time.

That being said, the scenes weren’t especially imaginative. It felt like the kind of porn the average 17-year-old boy would be tired of by now. What made the experience compelling was sitting in the driver’s seat but, otherwise, the scenes weren’t particularly groundbreaking.

It just goes to show how young this technology is and how much it will evolve as VR becomes more mainstream. Find out where experts think mixed reality adult content is headed in this piece, which prompted my first foray into the weird world of VR porn.
