What exactly would it look like if you took Super Mario out of his cartoon-like world and plopped him into a more realistic background?

That’s what 3D artist Aryok Pinera did. He took the popular Nintendo character and placed him in the Unreal Engine 4. The whole thing is like a mash-up of Mario wandering through the sets of your favorite films and/or everyday scenes, including an abandoned subway, cave, spacecraft and even an apartment that vaguely represents one of those new depressing boxes that are popping up all over Seattle (Mario promptly gets the hell out of there).

With almost 3 million views, the video is striking a chord with gaming fans.

This little video might be considered a preview as to what’s possible with Nintendo’s next console, or the “NX,” slated for release next year. As we reported in June, Nintendo is getting into gaming for smartphones and tablets:

“For many years Nintendo was reluctant to build mobile games because they thought the games devalued the industry because of their low price points. But three months ago, it announced a partnership with DeNA, a mobile development company to build out Nintendo’s suite of intellectual property – which includes iconic gaming franchises and characters like Mario – into games for mobile devices.”

Whatever the next-generation NX brings, it will be fun to watch.
