Naria Santa Lucia, executive director of the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship, introduces the Geeks Give Back campaign at the GeekWire Summit.

We’re nearly two weeks into our annual giving campaign, brought to you by GeekWire and Bank of America, called Geeks Give Back.  Have you checked it out yet? Made a donation? This is GeekWire, after all, and you’re reading it. That makes YOU a geek. Yup, we’re talking to you.

geeksgiveback1-logoFirst, the recap: We kicked off our program at the GeekWire Summit on October 1-2. Geeks Give Back raises funds for university STEM students through the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship.  These students, many of whom are women and people of color, are often the first in their family to attend college.  These are very smart kids studying very tough subjects so that someday they can do very important work. Just like you do now.

So far we’ve raised $30,000 from tech corporations like Moz, Chef, New Tech Seattle, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, PicMonkey, and from individuals like you from the technology community. Every dollar, up to $125,000, will be generously matched from Seattle angel investor and WSOS board member Gary Rubens and then matched again by the state of Washington. Quick math: every dollar donated turns into four. In total, we raised around $120K so far.

Our goal is to raise $500K on behalf of the WSOS and their deserving STEM students. We need tech companies and individuals alike to give back. So, over the next six weeks we’re going to sweeten the pot with a weekly prize. Every donor is entered and each week we’ll draw a winner. The first prize will be four tickets to the GeekWire Gala at MOHAI on December 2. That’s a value of $240!

How do you give back? That’s an easy one. Simply go to our WSOS Geeks Give Back giving page, enter your information and dig deep! WSOS is a 501(c)3 and all donations are tax deductible. Thank you for giving back and being such a great member of our tech community.
