Fresh off its big Golden Globe win for the TV series Transparent, Amazon today announced that it will produce and acquire feature-length movies for theatrical release. The movies will then be made available on Amazon Prime Instant Video four to eight weeks after the theatrical release.

“We look forward to expanding our production efforts into feature films. Our goal is to create close to twelve movies a year with production starting later this year,” said Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios, in a press release.

The effort, known as Amazon Original Movies, will be led by film vet Ted Hope. He previously led production company Good Machine, which produced Academy Award-nominated films such as Eat Drink Man Woman and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

“To help carry the torch into the feature film world for such an innovative company is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility,” Hope said.

Amazon has been expanding aggressively into the content business, announcing last week that director Woody Allen would create an original TV series for the company.

But Jeff Bezos may not be satisfied with a Golden Globe.

Next up, Oscar?
