Tableau Software already took over a former gym in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. Now, it is expanding into space next to its headquarters.

The maker of data visualization software indicated in a SEC filing Tuesday that it plans to lease 38,000 square-feet of space in the “Plaza Building” at 701 North 34th St. — right next door to the company’s headquarters.

That happens to be the same building where Impinj is located, and as we reported Monday the longtime maker of RFID technologies plans to move out of the building next year for new digs in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood.

Asked on Monday whether Tableau planned to gobble up the Impinj space, a spokeswoman for the company declined to comment.

Impinj is vacating about 36,000 square feet in the Plaza Building, though it is unclear whether Tableau is taking that space or another chunk in the office building. We have a message into Tableau to see if it is indeed taking the Impinj space.

Tableau is growing like a weed in Fremont, its home since moving to Seattle from Silicon Valley shortly after it was founded in 2003.

“Our goal is that we’d love to remain in Fremont,” Tableau Vice President Brett Thompson told GeekWire in August. “I describe that as a game of Tetris. I can only tell you the pieces that are coming down, and I have got to make them fit. The ones that haven’t come down, I don’t know. But that is our goal, and we hopefully will be able to achieve that.”

Tableau employed 1,717 people worldwide at the end of September, up 65 percent year-over-year.

In addition to the new lease, the SEC filing indicates that Tableau entered into a lease amendment for its current headquarters at 837 North 34th St. in the Lakeview Building. The lease is being extended by nine years and two months, and starting on July 1, 2015 the lease payment will increase from $155,193 per month to $202,492 per month through August 2024.

For the 38,000 square-foot expansion space in the Plaza Building, Tableau will pay $108,805 per month to start, with the rates increasing to $141,967 in 2024. Tableau already occupies 12,000 square-feet of sublet space in the Plaza Building.
