Kilar and Tom

Former Hulu execs Jason Kilar and Richard Tom both spent time in Seattle, having worked at companies such as Amazon.com and Microsoft.

They must have really liked their time here, since Kilar (the former CEO of Hulu) and Tom (the former CTO) emerged this week with a few sparse details about their stealthy new startup, which happens to be dubbed The Fremont Project.

In an email to GeekWire, Tom notes that the name actually references Seattle’s quirky Fremont neighborhood — a budding tech zone which also happens to be home to big companies like Tableau and Google as well as our favorite tech news site. (Yes, GeekWire is located in the “Center of the Universe.”)

“The code name is a nod to a fun neighborhood in Seattle that Jason and I were very fond of. It also happens to be the birth place of a very special cuban sandwich,” said Tom, referencing the famous sandwiches at Paseo, one of which was presented to the tech exec at the 2012 GeekWire Summit.

Kilar and Tom left Hulu earlier this year, and their movements have been closely watched.

“Rich and I have been fortunate to build and innovate alongside each other these past 5+ years and our plan is to do more of that on the road ahead,” wrote Kilar earlier this year.

And, even though their code name pays homage to Seattle, the startup is based in San Francisco.

The company’s Web site says the team is “hard at work on an ambitious mission.”

“We are seeking innovators that pursue better ways in all that they do,” the site says.

Tom tells us they have no immediate plans for operations in Fremont itself, though he added that they are “big fans of the Pacific Northwest tech community.”

“We aren’t sharing any details at the moment as we’re focused on building,” he said.

All Things D reports that Kilar and Tom’s latest consumer-oriented offering is somehow connected to the living room, though its unclear whether that means a hardware or software project.

The Fremont Project is operating under the legal name Grand Trunk Labs.
