Macy’s announced this week that it is expanding its same-day delivery service to nine additional markets in a move that keeps the retailer on pace with competitors like Amazon.com, Walmart, and Target.
The department store chain spent the past several months testing a same-day delivery pilot in eight markets and later this month will offer the service in 17 total metro areas thanks to a partnership with Deliv, a startup that utilizes a network of drivers and also partners with other shopping mall retailers.
Customers will pay an extra $5 for the same-day service. Macy’s, which has nearly 900 stores in the U.S. and reeled in $28.1 billion last year, also plans to offer same-day delivery from its high-end Bloomingdale’s chain soon.
Amazon, meanwhile, began offering free same-day delivery for Prime members in May for more than 1 million items across 14 metro areas in the U.S. for orders above $35. Non-Prime users have to pay $8.99, plus 99 cents per item for same-day orders. Amazon is also expanding Prime Now, a service for Prime members available in seven markets that promises to deliver thousands of every day household items within two hours for free, or one hour for a small fee.
Earlier this year, Walmart announced it was launching a fast delivery program. Target has a similar service. EBay, though, shut down its same-day delivery service last week.
Here are the cities where Macy’s will offer same-day delivery: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, New York/Western Long Island, Orange County, Calif., Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, the greater San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Northern New Jersey.
