perfect3If Google Glass becomes more popular, people will likely be recording more video than they do today with just smartphones and video cameras (do those still exist?).

Perfect, a young startup from the Bay Area, wants to help Glass owners edit and share clips taken with the high-tech specs.

“Editing and sharing is hard to do with Glass,” co-founder Hudson Duan said. “We decided to help other people with this problem that we ourselves had.”

Duan and co-founder Colin Hom, best friends from high school, are recent college graduates who both share a love for video. Now they’ve started Perfect and made it in the most recent class of TechStars Seattle.

We caught up with the 23-year-old Duan for the latest edition of Startup Spotlight.

Explain what you do so our parents can understand it: We are video life-logging platform made specifically for Google Glass. We take your video clips that you take throughout the day and assemble them into a timeline of musical trailers.

Inspiration hit us when … We were squatting under the Denny bridge over I-5 trying to stay dry and started talking about how life needed music. After fleshing the idea, Colin looked at me and said: “I think I see a pack of deer”.

VC, Angel or Bootstrap: Bootstrap to remain flexible; we like to keep our options open.

Our ‘secret sauce’ is: “Going to the lake”

The smartest move we’ve made so far: Working with a completely new platform (Google Glass). We like to throw around nonsense and it sounds a lot better when there are no precedents.

perfect1The biggest mistake we’ve made so far: Overestimating what is possible with a two person team.

Would you rather have Gates, Jobs, Zuckerberg or Bezos in your corner: In 7th grade our English teacher had us all choose a celebrity we admired and make a poster/biography to present to the class. I chose Gates because he seemed like he always knew what he wanted and did not care what other people thought.

Our world domination strategy starts when: We integrate with other life-logging services and correlate things like your sleep cycle, what songs you pick and your heart rate to what you are looking at through Glass.

Rivals should fear us because: We think really big and work really small.

We are truly unique because: It’s hard to find two people who communicate as well as we do.

The biggest hurdle we’ve overcome is: Reigning in the stubbornness without stamping out the conviction.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to other entrepreneurs just starting out: It’s literally impossible to make everyone happy so pick and choose.
