kindlefirehdPreviously available to only a handful of countries, Amazon announced today that it will be shipping both its 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablets to 170 countries around the globe starting June 13.

The 8.9-inch version is available for preorder starting today for $284, while the 7-inch tablet is also available for preorder at $214.

Two months ago, when Amazon lowered the price of its biggest Kindle to $269, it also announced the tablet’s availability in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan. Today’s rollout obviously extends Amazon’s global reach quite a bit more.

Dave Limp, VP of Amazon Kindle, said in a press release that the “Kindle Fire HD is the #1 best-selling item in the world for Amazon since its launch,” but provided no specific numbers.

Amazon also said today that its Appstore for Android is now available internationally to countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, India, South Africa and South Korea — reaching nearly 200 countries around the world. It makes sense that the company made both announcements on the same day as it continues to grow the market for its Kindle Fire tablet.
