A new update promises to make Amazon’s Kindle Scribe better for notetaking.

Released this morning, the update (Version 5.16.2) includes a lasso tool that lets users select handwritten text on the device to move, copy, cut, and paste.

It’s similar to a longstanding feature in the reMarkable 2 tablet, the established player in the market for E-Ink notebooks and the Scribe’s biggest competitor.

Amazon says the update will also offer the ability to convert handwritten notes to text when exporting a notebook to a designated email address.

In addition, the update includes reading improvements for PDFs uploaded through the Send to Kindle feature, including the ability to change the way PDFs are displayed, and select text to make highlights or add notes.

Amazon also debuted a new selection of books in the Kindle Store that offer the ability to write directly on the page. Initial “Write-on Books” include guided journals and puzzles such as crosswords and sodokus.

An earlier Kindle Scribe update (Version 5.16.1.3), released in April, included the ability to move pages around inside notebooks, and add new pages anywhere inside a notebook, not just at the tail end, as was the case before.

The latest update will be rolled out automatically to Kindle Scribe users, but it can also be downloaded and installed manually via this page.
