Who plays social casino games? Where are they from? And when do they play?

These are some of the questions answered by the U.S. Social Casino Index study done by DoubleDown Casino, the Seattle maker of casino-style social games that was gobbled up by Las Vegas-based International Game Technology for as much as $500 million last year.

The study, based on the six million people who play DoubleDown Casino games on Facebook per month, revealed the most saturated demographic as women between the ages of 45 and 55. Women also play 30 percent more virtual chips than men per social gaming session.

California was the “luckiest state,” as it has the most amount of winners — though this is likely due in part to the amount of people playing in California overall. Wyoming and Idaho, meanwhile, were “very unlucky,” DoubleDown found.

The West Coast has more people playing in general, with players winning more than 1.7 billion virtual chips in the first half of the year, compared to 790 million chips won by players on the East Coast. North Dakota, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Wyoming had the highest concentration of players across the U.S.

Another interesting data point was mobile vs. desktop players. Delaware had the most mobile users, with players nearly 25 percent more likely to play on their smartphones and tablets. Maine was on the other side of the spectrum, with players only five percent more likely to use mobile for DoubleDown games.

Finally, the study looked at time of day, with players most active on DoubleDown from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

DoubleDown saw its monthly user base grow by 32 percent and revenue grow 151 percent from last year in IGT’s most recent earnings report.
