New journalists with a passion for covering climate technology are encouraged to apply for GeekWire’s new summer 2024 climate tech internship, the Etzioni Internship in Climate Tech Journalism.

GeekWire is the Pacific Northwest’s top technology news site and the region is a hub for companies and researchers developing groundbreaking solutions for sustainable aviation, nuclear fusion and fission, battery technology, green hydrogen and climate software tools.

Washington state is home to major supporters of climate technologies, including Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy, Microsoft and Amazon, and the tech giants’ climate investment funds. The region’s governments are passing legislation to drive adoption of clean technologies. Leading institutions including the University of Washington, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Washington State University are based here.

The full-time, three-month internship will provide a college student or recent graduate the opportunity to cover this expanding, critical sector. Candidates need to have previous journalism experience at a university newspaper or other media outlet.

The intern must be located in the Seattle area for the role, and assignments will require reporting in person as well as from GeekWire’s Seattle office and from home.

Duration: June 10-Aug 30 (with some flexibility to meet school calendars)

About the opportunity:

  • Report on climate technology startups, academic research and funding in the Pacific Northwest’s climate tech hub.
  • Generate your own story ideas, receive assignments, and report and write stories for publication on GeekWire.
  • Receive mentoring and editing from GeekWire staff, while working independently and meeting deadlines.

Application requirements:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in journalism or communications with a focus on news coverage, or demonstrated experience in journalism
  • Three writing samples from a college publication or other news outlet
  • Resume

    • Why are you passionate about journalism, and specifically climate-related journalism?
    • What do you expect will be most challenging about this opportunity, and how will you manage that challenge?

The Etzioni Internship in Climate Tech Journalism at GeekWire is supported through a grant provided by Oren and Eli Etzioni. Oren Etzioni is the founding CEO at the Allen Institute for AI, a computer science professor at the University of Washington, a technical director at the AI2 Incubator, and a venture partner at Madrona. Eli Etzioni is a partnerships manager at climate tech startup Tradewater, and a former summer intern at GeekWire.
