Sarah Bird, the Seattle tech veteran who led SEO software startup Moz for seven years, is the new CEO of Canvas, a software company that builds technology for remodeling, architecture and interior design.

A former lawyer who started at Moz as chief operating officer in 2007, Bird left the company in November 2021 after it was acquired by J2 Global.

She spent almost two years on a sabbatical that she said was filled with travel, startup investing, volunteering, remodeling her home and more. She also got engaged, she wrote on LinkedIn on Wednesday.

Feeling “powered up,” Bird called the Canvas job her “next dream role.”

Canvas uses LiDAR-enabled iPhone or iPad scans to capture precise 3D representations of homes and create interactive models with accurate measurements. The process turns the scans into detailed, editable, as-built files in industry-standard formats.

The fully remote company, with a headquarters in Boulder, Colo., traces its roots to 2008, when Jeffrey Powers and Vikas Reddy co-founded the firm, previously known as Occipital Inc.

“What truly excites me about Canvas is not just the groundbreaking technology but also the customers we serve,” Bird said on LinkedIn. “They are the artisans of our spaces, blending art and science in their craft to make our environments more beautiful and functional. It’s an honor to support them in their workflow and contribute to their success.”

Bird is a University of Washington School of Law graduate who previously sat on the board of the Washington Technology Industry Association. She plans to stay in Seattle and said one of her first priorities as CEO is to fill a gap in the Canvas leadership team, including chief revenue officer.
