As Apple looked to the “future of the Mac” at its “One more Thing” event on Tuesday, the tech giant reached into the past to take another dig at the PC.
Just after Apple CEO Tim Cook said so long from the nearly hour-long reveal of a new chip and new Macs, a once-familiar advertising personality crashed the party with a final question: “Why? Whyyyyy?”
The cameo was a throwback to Apple’s “Get a Mac” advertising campaign, which ran from 2006 to 2009 and featured a hip, casually dressed young guy — “Hello, “I’m a Mac” — and a frumpy, suit-wearing guy — “And I’m a PC.”
Author and TV personality John Hodgman reprised his role as a Microsoft Windows PC, standing alone this time against a white backdrop moaning about Mac advancements. Mac actor Justin Long never appears.
“What’s the point?” the PC asks about Apple’s latest splash. “Oh, you’re so quiet now. I’m a machine. I’m proud of it,” he says while making a whirring sound. “Longer battery life? Just plug it in. Where you goin’?”
Hodgman as the PC then starts running in place and says, “I still got it,” before running out of gas and leaving in search of an outlet so he could plug in.
