Amazon is growing its Portland, Ore. tech team by 400 people and moving into a new 84,000 square foot office in the city’s urban core.

The company said Wednesday it plans to double its Portland workforce with the new downtown office. The new roles will be in operations, software engineering, product management, and other tech fields. Amazon has more than 3,500 employees throughout Oregon.

The focus of the Portland tech hub is Amazon Web Services, the company’s massive cloud arm. It’s also home to AWS Elemental, the video processing startup Amazon acquired in 2015 when it was known as Elemental Technologies.

“Our state is a great place to live, work, and play, and I’m pleased to see more Oregon jobs in the pipeline via the Amazon Portland Tech Hub,” said Oregon Governor Kate Brown in a statement. “By adding 400 more jobs, we grow both our vibrant tech industry and our community.”

Reports of Amazon’s Portland expansion surfaced last year. It’s part of a broader growth strategy in which Amazon is beefing up tech teams in offices around the world as it expands beyond the company’s Seattle headquarters.

The same day Amazon announced the Portland expansion, the e-commerce giant opened a large new campus in India with room for more than 15,000 employees. There are more than 650,000 Amazon employees worldwide.

Amazon has 18 tech hubs across North America with more than 20,000 employees working at the distributed offices. The company is also building a 25,000-person campus in Northern Virginia.
