RIP, Samsung Galaxy Note 7

A year-end tradition on our GeekWire radio show and podcast is to bring in tech reviewer Andru Edwards of Gear Live to share his favorite consumer electronics products and gadgets of the year.

But this time, he wasn’t able to bring one of his favorite devices of the year, because it was recalled after demonstrating a propensity to spontaneously combust. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 was “the best smartphone hardware released this year,” says Andru on the show. “In fact, in my perfect world, I would have a Note 7 that runs iOS.”

Watch the behind-the-scenes video above, as Andru speaks with GeekWire’s John Cook and me about his 2016 picks in notebooks, smartphones, smart speakers, external storage devices and other categories. We also talk about the rise of 3D printing and virtual reality.

Here are more of Andru’s picks from this week’s show.
