t-mobileT-Mobile continued to grow rapidly in the second quarter, adding a net total of 1.9 million customers — its 13th consecutive quarter with more than 1 million new customers — bringing its total to 67.4 million customers overall.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based wireless carrier remains a distant third to larger rivals Verizon and AT&T in the U.S., but it has been growing faster than each in many respects. Verizon, which this week announced plans to acquire Yahoo, reported declining wireless revenue yesterday. Sprint, the fourth-largest carrier, meanwhile saw its stock dip by more than 7 percent Wednesday.

“Clearly, our winning streak continued this quarter,” said T-Mobile CEO John Legere on a conference call with analysts this morning.

T-Mobile this morning posted revenue of $9.2 billion, up 7.2 percent. Net income was $225 million, down from $361 million a year ago, due primarily to the impact of interest and income tax expenses, the company said. However, the company’s earnings per share of 25 cents beat Wall Street’s expectations for the quarter by 3 cents.

T-Mobile added a net total of 890,000 branded postpaid customers, down from more than 1 million in the same quarter a year ago. These customers, who pay at the end of a billing period, typically have better credit than their prepaid peers and are a key measure of a wireless carrier’s health. T-Mobile said the decline “was primarily due to the absence of iconic device launches in the period.”

For the full year, however, the company remained bullish on that metric — raised its guidance for branded postpaid net additions to a range of 3.4 to 3.8 million, from the previous range of 3.2 million to 3.6 million.
