A Washington man taking selfies with his girlfriend and a gun shot himself in the face and died on Sunday, according to a news report.

The Skagit Valley Herald says the 43-year-old Concrete, Wash., man and his girlfriend were in a house in the 46000 block of Baker Loop Road taking photos of themselves when the incident occurred. The man’s name was not released.

Chad Clark, chief of patrol with the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, said the man and woman had reportedly loaded and unloaded the weapon several times during the day, taking pictures throughout.

Clark said a bullet apparently remained in the gun the last time the man handled it and the incident is being investigated as an accident.

Earlier this month, CNN reported on a study looking into deaths related to people taking selfies. The study by Priceonomics found that “the selfie seems to serve as an inopportune catalyst — a distractor in situations where the picture-taker should should be focused on safety.”
