Augmented and virtual reality has crept its way into video games, work places, and even news reporting. Now a team of six artists and other collaborators, led by Seattle-based artist Ginny Ruffner, is also bringing augmented reality into Seattle’s art world with the installation Poetic Hybrids, which will be on display at Seattle Art Museum this Thursday, Sept. 1 and Friday, Sept. 2.

The installation was inspired by interviews with genetic researchers, from which Ruffner drew concepts that inspired scientists, and what they found beautiful in their work. During the exhibit, visitors can choose concepts from this list — like “discovery” or “gravity” — and watch as artists create a holographic art piece in real time to embody the concepts.

Visitors can then view the piece through augmented reality, and manipulate the hologram by “painting” it in their own style. This event is free and open to the public. Check out the SAM’s website for more information.

Social Determinants of Health: The Access ConundrumCambiaGrove_Brown

What: “Social determinants of health – the conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks – are generating considerable interest in our region as an underappreciated influence on the health of our residents. The Cambia Grove’s upcoming event series on Social Determinants of Health will provide – during three separate events in August and September of 2016 – a point of entry for health care organizations that want to address SDoH more systematically. At these events we hope to establish a rich seed bed for collaboration on the large scale interventions that this work requires. To date, even though a growing number of organizations understand the importance of SDoH to the health of the diverse populations that call this area home, the community necessary to address SDoH in the Puget Sound is still developing.”
