Snapchat gets a bad rap as a frivolous messaging tool — driven largely by the self-destructing nature of the photos. But New York’s annual Tribeca Film Festival is bringing new legitimacy to this storytelling medium. A panel of avid Snapchatters, festival programmers, and members of team Snapchat will select 10 Snapchat videos from a pool of submissions. The winning shorts will be screened during the 2016 film festival.

“Brought together by a shared love of storytelling, Tribeca Film Festival, and Snapchat have joined forces to bring you Tribeca Snapchat Shorts, the first-ever program of its kind,” write festival organizers.

The theme is comedy and Snapchat Shorts, under 200 seconds, will be considered between Feb. 27 to March 8. In addition to exposure, the top Snapchat storytellers will win an all-inclusive trip to the Tribeca Film Festival.
