Cyber Monday is still under way, but Amazon gave an early indication of its sales results in an update this afternoon — saying the company is “on pace to have our best Cyber Monday in history,” driven in part by increasing mobile orders.
Without disclosing any specific numbers, the company said the best-selling item so far on Amazon.com on Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday is its own Echo Dot smart speaker, which is available for $39.99 as part of the company’s Cyber Monday deal.
The early results reinforce Cyber Monday as the most important day of the year for the online retailer. Amazon said orders via its mobile app are on pace to surpass those from Cyber Monday last year. In addition, the company said, “In the first half of Cyber Monday, Amazon.com customers ordered more than 2 million toys and the Pie Face Showdown Game by Hasbro is our best-selling toy so far.”
Beyond smartphones and tablets, Amazon is trying to get shoppers to use its Alexa voice assistant to order items, offering Alexa-exclusive deals for people ordering via Echo devices and other Alexa-enabled products. Amazon said Prime members “made more than 30 shopping interactions with Alexa per second” on Black Friday, an all-time high.
Cyber Monday is traditionally the largest online shopping day across the industry, but strong online sales on Black Friday this year have raised the possibility, at least, that it won’t be that way this year. Adobe, which tracks online sales through its retail marketing platform, said earlier today that it expects Cyber Monday online sales in the U.S. to reach $3.36 billion, which would just barely edge out Black Friday, which saw online sales of $3.34 billion this year.
