Seattle-based Whitepages has acquired NumberCop, a service that fights against phone scammers, robo-calls and SMS phishing. The San Francisco-based company’s technology will be incorporated into Whitepages’ existing Caller ID app.
“The integration of NumberCop cements our position as the industry leader in identifying abusive phone activity,” Whitepages CEO Alex Algard said in a press release today. “Now, not only are we detecting annoying telemarketers, but we’re also adding protection against the really bad guys for our mobile app users and business customers.”
NumberCop founder Jan Volzke will join Whitepages as vice president of reputation services, where he said he will continue to help the company keep users’ phones safer from scams.
NumberCop tracked more than 350,000 phone numbers that frequently used spamming and phishing techniques to protect users of its iOS and Android applications. NumberCop will continue providing service to existing users through the end of the year.
