The artist who showed us a whole new world in Aladdin twirls in a kind of dance — no ordinary paintbrush in hand — and asks himself, “What is this amazing new world I stepped into?”

It’s the world of virtual reality that renowned Disney animator Glen Keane is experiencing.

“When I animate there’s a frustration I have, wishing that the flatness of the paper would go away and that I could actually dive in,” says Keane. “Today all the rules have changed. By putting tools in your hand that can create in virtual reality, I can put goggles on and I just step into the paper, and now I’m drawing in it.”

Over the past four decades Keane brought beloved characters like The Little Mermaid, the Beast from Beauty and the Beast, and Tarzan to life, embracing new digital tools like 3D animation throughout his career.

In the video below, produced by The Future of Story Telling, Keane tries out the newest innovation threatening to disrupt storytelling and animation — and the results are out of this world.
