Volt Athletics is raising more money to fuel growth of its online fitness training platform.

The Seattle-based startup has reeled in another $1 million from unnamed angel investors to push total funding to $2 million for the two-year-old company.

The fresh cash will be used to develop Volt’s platform, which offers a customizable online fitness training platform for athletes, and help the startup expand to new markets.

“Technology is gaining steam in the strength and conditioning industry and Volt is leading the way,” said co-founder and CEO Dan Giuliani. “This means that the low-tech tools upon which the industry relies — barbells, dumbbells, and medicine balls — now meet high-tech solutions for data measurement and performance analysis. This strategic round accelerates Volt’s ability to unite strength training and technology, bringing safe and effective training to athletes around the world.”

Volt utilizes technology that allows athletes to build hundreds of specialized and personalized workouts. The company differentiates itself by focusing on innovating the delivery of training content and expertise, versus only tracking metrics and storing data. It released a new version of its software this week.

voltathletics1Volt originally targeted people involved with sports at the high school and small college level — those that may not have the luxury of full-time strength and conditioning personnel that Division-I teams often hire.

Now, though, the company counts big-name athletic programs at schools like the University of Washington and the University of Michigan as clients.

“When we first entered the digital sport performance market, we had to introduce a lot of coaches to the concept of leveraging an online platform to deliver strength training,” Giuliani said. “Now, we have to keep up with the demand.”

Founded in 2011, Volt now has 30,000 athletes on more than 1,300 high school, college, and professional teams in the U.S. and Canada using its software, which is recommended by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. The company, which inked a partnership with USA Football in July, employs 16 people in Seattle.
