Microsoft ad shows workers caroling outside of Apple store.

Microsoft released a new holiday-themed commercial on Tuesday that shows workers leaving the company’s own store in New York City, walking five blocks down the road and caroling in front of Apple’s flagship store.

The ad says the scene was filmed on Nov. 16, right before the holiday shopping season kicked off and Microsoft and Apple inevitably found themselves fighting over the same pool of customers.

But the commercial shows workers putting all that aside in the name of Christmas — at least while the cameras were rolling. The ad concludes with the image of Apple and Microsoft employees hugging and the words, “spread harmony.”

The ad takes a starkly different approach from past Microsoft ads, which for a while almost always took a jab or two at its Silicon Valley competitor.

But we’ve seen a softer, kinder side of Microsoft more recently. The company has begun embracing competitors and bringing apps to Apple devices. And if that wasn’t enough, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella even demoed Microsoft software on an iPhone at a recent keynote address.
