It’s not laser-beams-mounted-on-sharks cool, but it’s still fairly cool.
Boeing unveiled this video of its Compact Laser Weapons System yesterday. The laser beam was developed to concentrate large amounts of energy onto small targets to disable them.
“Think of it like a welding torch,” says Boeing engineer Isaac Neal in the video. “Being put on target, but from many hundreds of meters away.”
In the test, the Boeing laser took out the drone in about 15 seconds.
The system is portable and can be set up quickly, making it ideal for combat situations, as the Boeing engineers state in the video. They also point out that it’s almost impossible to detect. As you’ll see, there is no hint that the beam is coming — it’s invisible.
