This solar-powered plane kit looks like it could be fun way to teach kids more about renewable energy.

ToyLabs has started a Kickstarter for the Volta Flyer, a science kit with all the fixings to build a solar-powered plane.

As ToyLabs has already developed a kit for a solar-powered car, this seems like the logical next step. The Volta Flyer is a DIY kit that includes all the parts to build the plane, no special tools or glue is needed. The makers say that it can be assembled in as little as 20 minutes.

After assembling it, it can charge up in about 90 seconds and is ready for flight.

The purpose? To help teach kids more about aeronautics, engineering and renewable energy.

So far, they’ve had about 120 backers contribute over $8,000 on the way to a $39,000 goal with 27 days to go. A pledge of $40 will secure the plane. The Volta Flyer is scheduled to ship in March 2016.
