Microsoft and Docker announced today that the two companies have forged a partnership targeted at bringing support for containerized applications to Microsoft’s products.

The partnership will be focused on bringing Docker Engine, the runtime that builds, runs and orchestrates containers, to Windows Server in an upcoming release, as well as integrating Docker Hub into Microsoft Azure through the Azure Management Portal and Azure Gallery. Docker is an open platform for developers to build, ship and run distributed applications.

The news comes after Microsoft launched support for Linux-based Docker containers on Azure earlier this year. The company has been working to make a number of key cloud service partnerships over the past year as a part of CEO Satya Nadella’s new strategy, and this tie-up with Docker is the next move in a process that has already included industry titans like Salesforce.

There’s more cloud news coming: Microsoft will be holding a press event to discuss more of its plans for how its cloud can impact business customers next week.
