screen480x480Amazon made a splash last month when it announced WorkSpaces, a desktop virtualization system that streams a Windows 7 desktop from the company’s cloud infrastructure to a client machine, including a tablet.

Now, thanks to the release of a new app, users who have a WorkSpaces account can use the system with their iPad. That account requirment is key, though: WorkSpaces is only in a “limited preview,” so while users can sign up for the service, not everybody will get access just yet.

At the moment, a basic WorkSpaces account costs $35 per user per month, with prices scaling up from there for more features, like installation of Microsoft Office, and other applications.

With WorkSpaces, the company is gunning for a share of the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure market, currently home to major players like IBM, Citrix and VMWare. It’s not clear yet when the new service will leave its limited preview, but the launch of the WorkSpaces app for iPad is a step in that direction.
