Remember the days of flicking a paper triangle through the ‘goalposts’ of your friend’s hands? Here’s the digital version of that game, officially sanctioned by the NFL. I’ve been having lots of fun with this app, despite one annoyance.

The app is “NFL Kicker 13,” available for 99 cents for iPhone, iPad and Android and I like it for the realistic visuals and the immersive gameplay. The concept is simple — flick the football to send it through the uprights, aiming for the golden ribbon. As the game goes on, you move farther and farther away with each kick, and the wind picks up to make things that much tougher.

Developed by the UK’s Full Fat Games, the game makes nice use of the NFL licensing to offer the ability to play as a kicker from any NFL team. A bonus game inside the app (unlocked when you do well enough kicking field goals) lets you play as a punter making “coffin corner” kicks toward the end zone.

The one thing I don’t like is the constant nagging to purchase additional credits to add additional “boosts” to help your kicking in the game — a little like having your friend beg you for your lunch money in the old days of paper football. But the nagging is relatively easily ignored. You can earn credits over time by playing, as well, although it takes a while to rack them up.
