BreakingNews, the Seattle-based unit of msnbc.com responsible for BreakingNews.com and the @BreakingNews Twitter feed, made its first international expansion today, announcing a new London-based team that will link to and tweet about UK-focused breaking news.

“From the riots to the News of the World scandal, the UK has experienced a tremendous year of news so far,” writes Cory Bergman, BreakingNews director, in a blog post announcing the expansion. “Our London team will help strengthen BreakingNews’ overall global coverage, including the European debt crisis and continuing unrest in the Middle East and North Africa.”

A newly launched redesign of the MSN UK portal prominently features the new BreakingNews UK feed, and the London-based team also will run a new @BreakingNewsUK Twitter feed.

BreakingNews describes itself as a startup inside msnbc.com. The main @BreakingNews Twitter feed has amassed more than 3.2 million followers, linking to news from a wide variety of sources.

Msnbc.com, an editorial partner of GeekWire, is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.
