AT&T plans to begin selling Amazon’s Kindle 3G with Special Offers this Sunday in company-owned retail stores, marking an expansion of its electronic reader line-up. The device, which features advertising and utilizes the AT&T network, costs $139.

AT&T is touting the device as part of a back-to-school promotion, noting that students can now rent college text books “at sharply reduced pricing” via Kindle.

The companies had previously announced that the device would be available through AT&T, which also entered into a sponsorship deal with Amazon.

The cheapest Kindle with Special Offers remains the Wi-Fi version, which retails for $114.

Amazon first introduced the concept of an ad-based Kindle in April, with sponsors such as Visa, Buick and Chase.

AT&T says that the Kindle 3G is one of the fastest-growing connected devices on the company’s wireless network.
