If the prospect of wasting money on renting a space that you’re barely gonna use makes you cringe inside, take a look at this report via Business Insider.

They have found a 23-year-old Google employee, a software engineer who’s living life in the back of a 16-foot long, 128-square-foot truck. In Google’s parking lot.

Since he relies on work for most of his meals, showers and powering up devices, it seems to be working out quite well for him so far.

In Business Insider‘s completely fascinating look at life inside a truck: “The idea started to formulate while Brandon — who asked to withhold his last name and photo to maintain his privacy on campus — was interning at Google last summer and living in the cheapest corporate housing offered: two bedrooms and four people for about $65 a night (roughly $2,000 a month).”

“I realized I was paying an exorbitant amount of money for the apartment I was staying in — and I was almost never home,” Brandon told Business Insider. “It’s really hard to justify throwing that kind of money away. You’re essentially burning it — you’re not putting equity in anything and you’re not building it up for a future — and that was really hard for me to reconcile.”

In fact, Brandon is blogging about the experience at Thoughts from Inside the Box. I highly suggest taking a look if you’re struggling with work-life balance, which seems to be all the rage these days, especially when it comes to the discussion about Amazon.

“The first thing I had to do was to realize that just because I’m relying on work for most of my basic needs (showers, bathrooms, food, laundry, gym, etc), I can still draw a clear line between when I’m working and furthering the goals of the company I work for, and when I’m enjoying my own free time,” writes the blog’s author.

If you’re old enough to remember Chris Farley on SNL, living in a truck in Google’s parking lot might conjure up thoughts of living in a van down by the river. But the blog’s author poses a lot of common sense arguments to support his lifestyle.

Sure, it’s not realistic for many, but he’s got life hacks, and tips on reducing waste, maximizing savings and enjoying free time. It’s a cool read.

What are some interesting ways that you or someone you know is adapting to modern life to make it more palatable in Seattle? We’d love to hear it in the comments.
