Lego_CanoLego fans were in for a treat this weekend at Safeco Field.

As part of a special event at the Mariners game on Sunday, the MLB club announced its lineup with Lego figurines and featured some sweet Lego exhibits around the park for fans to enjoy.

Lego_SeagerThe afternoon started with a ceremonial first pitch from Lego Movie writer and director Chris Miller, a Washington native who graduated from Lakeside High School, the alma mater of Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The Mariners PA announcer named off Miller’s accolades — he also helped direct 21 Jump Street, How I Met Your Mother, and Brooklyn 99 — and noted that, “basically, everything he works on is awesome.”

When Miller’s pitch landed 10 feet short and outside the batter’s box, the announcer said, “OK, almost everything is awesome.”

During the game, fans had a chance to check out Lego displays built by Seattle Lego Users Group and Dan Parker, a former Lego Certified Professional who creates custom Lego displays for a living. We featured some of Parker’s work last year when his Lego landmarks were on display at the EMP Museum.

Lego versions of each player were shown on the Safeco Field’s giant 11,000 square-foot HD video board, which is the biggest in the MLB. You can actually buy the mini figurines from OYO Sports.

After the game, the Mariners let fans stick around to watch The Lego Movie on big board.

The team said that the Lego Movie showing on Sunday at Safeco Field may have broken a record for the largest film screen ever in the Northwest.

You can add Sunday’s Lego event to the growing list of geekiness going on at Safeco Field this year. The team also installed LED stadium lights this season and featured a hologram of its mascot.
