Beloved and delightfully wicked author George R.R. Martin took to the Writers Guide West Awards and dropped some potential bombshells for HBO’s Game of Thrones fans.

“People are going to die who don’t die in the books, so even the book readers will be unhappy,” Martin said, as The Independent reports. “Everybody better be on their toes.”

The notoriously sexy/bloody fantastical season five romp will include some shockers. Martin warned fans that four characters are set to be killed off, including “Daenerys’ handmaiden Irri, Walder Frey’s wife Joyeuse Erenford and Qarth merchant Xaro Xhoan Daxos,” as he told Conan last year.

Martin’s got two more books in the works for the series, The Winds of Winter and The Dream of Spring, but has also been pretty blasé about exactly how many more seasons HBO will sign on for the show.

The gore is always part of Game of Thrones appeal. The Red Wedding killed off most of the Stark clan, and last year’s skull-crushing end to the Red Viper made my jaw hit the floor. The new season starts April 12.

In the meantime, here’s the trailer again:
