Fresh off its deal with Glympse to allow users to share their location while up in the air, in-flight Wi-Fi provider Gogo says it plans to offer users the ability to call and text while connected to the company’s network.
That doesn’t mean the company is going to be offering LTE at 30,000 feet. Users will only be able to make calls and send and receive texts via Wi-Fi through Gogo’s smartphone app, which is available on iOS and Android. Those calls and texts will originate form the user’s phone number, though it’s not clear how that will work from a technical standpoint.
The news was reported by The Verge today. According to the report, the service hasn’t launched on any commercial airlines yet, though Gogo is in talks to get major airlines on board with the initiative.
According to a report by Cnet, the company has not yet determined how much it will cost to use the service.
