Microsoft says it’s restoring Office 365 email service to customers in United States and the rest of the continent after reports of a widespread outage for much of the afternoon.

We’ve been getting calls from GeekWire readers alerting us to the outage (since they’re unable to get emails through to us) and the news is also making the rounds on Twitter. Technically, it’s an email “delay,” according to the company.

The official Office 365 account just tweeted this …

But this is the tweet that’s getting even more attention, under the circumstances — from the official “Why Microsoft” account, which is used by the company to tout its products.

One of the milder responses we’re seeing on Twitter …

Meanwhile, this was the word from the president of imason, a consulting firm that specializes in Microsoft technologies.

Yikes. Looks like that outage isn’t the only thing the company needs to repair after this afternoon.

Just another day at the endless embarassment known as MS.

Right…because Microsoft is the only service to suffer an outage.

Rackspace had major issues too, at the same time…. Coincidence?

No. But it’s the only one so internally dysfunctional that one group is marketing the service at the same time its crashing.
