Here’s what we learned from Amazon’s top-10 best-selling books of 2012: People love bad boy romance novels and independent publishers are more important than ever.

The Seattle retail giant unveiled its top-10 books of the year and “Fifty Shades Freed,” the third book of E.L. James’ extremely popular “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy, took the top spot.

The full trilogy as a set finished third on the list, while author Sylvia Day had two books — “Bared to You: A Crossfire Novel” and ““Reflected in You: A Crossfire Novel” — in the top 10.

“This was truly the year of the billionaire bad boy in romance—Amazon readers just couldn’t get enough of the genre,” Sara Nelson, Editorial Director of Books and Kindle at Amazon.com, said in a press release.

The list also shows how publishers and independent publishers need each other. Four of the five contemporary romance titles in the top 10 were originally independently published before becoming huge hits and top sellers.

The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, Book 3)” was the best-selling Kids & Teens book.

Steve Jobs’ biography, last year’s best-selling book, didn’t make the list this year.

The list only counts first editions that were published in 2012 and only paid units, and combine print and Kindle formats. Here’s a list of Amazon’s top 100 best-selling print and Kindle books of 2012.
