How ALLtech Benefits’ Support of Trails is an Investment in a Healthy Community
Since 2019, GeekWire and ALLtech Benefits have teamed up every summer to support the Washington Trails Association (WTA) through the annual Hike-a-Thon fundraiser. Over the years, the team has raised more than $20,000 under the leadership of ALLtech Trustee Ken Myer, whose dedication to supporting both trails and wellness is highlighted in the latest WTA magazine.
“We believe — and the science supports — that getting outdoors in nature is good for the body and the mind,” Myer says in the article “Supporting Trails, Investing in Health,” which attributes trail use to $390 million in annual health savings for Washington state residents.
In his role as trustee, Myer guides the vision and mission for ALLtech, which partners with GeekWire to provide health insurance and other employee benefits to its members. But Myer takes his role one step further by putting a focus on wellness and sharing his passion for the outdoors to ALLtech members.
“We know that folks in the tech industry love the outdoors, and many of them love to get on trails,” he says. “It seems only natural — sorry for the pun — to support them in learning more about the opportunities to experience our fantastic trail system.”
Champion Fundraisers
Myer has been known to share his favorite hikes via the ALLtech News page and monthly ALLhealth e-newsletter, which often feature seasonal hikes, safety tips and other resources from wta.org. Then summer hits, and Hike-a-Thon takes center stage.
By July, Myer is busy recruiting ALLtech staff and members enrolled in the employee benefits platform to join the ALLtech Hike-a-Thon team and experience the health benefits of hiking.
Participants log their hikes throughout August, with the option to share their trip reports on wta.org. And although raising money for Hike-a-Thon isn’t a requirement for participants, there are prizes for those who raise the most – and the ALLtech team has been at the top of that list for three years running in the category “raising the most money for a company team.”
“We are so proud of the ALLtech team for showing such strong support for the Washington Trails Association,” Myer said in ALLtech’s recap of the 2022 event. “Hike-a-Thon is always such a fun event and the work of the WTA aligns so closely with our mission. Our trail system is a treasure and getting out in nature is so good for our health.”
