Seattle Space Week: Counterintelligence Briefing
An unclassified Seattle Space Week briefing on how foreign intelligence entities target commercial space companies, and what a company without cleared personnel can practically do about it.
The speaker is Nick Reese, vice president of strategic initiatives and emerging tech at John Squared, the first director of emerging technology policy at the Department of Homeland Security, lead DHS representative for Space Policy Directive-5 and author of the 2022 DHS Space Policy, with a career spanning the U.S. military, the intelligence community and homeland security.
Organizers point to a standing bulletin from the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, the FBI and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations warning that foreign intelligence entities are targeting the U.S. space industry through cyber intrusion, strategic investment and joint ventures, supply chain nodes, conference and online outreach, facility visit requests and employee recruitment. The session is aimed at orbital and ground segment operators across the region’s satellite and ground infrastructure base.
The format combines networking, a keynote and the briefing. Attendees leave with a targeting-indicator checklist, a due-diligence prompt list for investors and suppliers, and the correct reporting channels.
