Microsoft showed this example of generative AI summarizing customer reviews.

Is this the future of online customer reviews?

Microsoft this morning said it will use generative artificial intelligence to automatically summarize app reviews by customers.

“We are making it faster and easier for customers to scan reviews for apps by using the power of AI to compile thousands of reviews into a simple summary, enabling customers to discover new content with ease,” says Panos Panay, Microsoft’s chief product officer, in a blog post.

Synthesizing and summarizing text is in the sweet spot of current AI capabilities powered by large language models.

Although Amazon hasn’t given any public indication of its plans in this regard, it would seem natural for the e-commerce giant to ultimately go in this direction, as part of the evolution of its customer reviews.

Microsoft announced the news at its Build developer conference Tuesday morning. In related news, the company also said it will launch a dedicated section in the Microsoft Store for AI apps and experiences.
