Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and fiancée Lauren Sanchez are dedicating $100 million to a fund to help the Hawaiian island of Maui recover from devastating wildfires this week.

  • In an Instagram post on Friday, Sanchez wrote that she and Bezos were heartbroken by what’s happening in Maui and “thinking of the families that have lost so much.” The post was shared by Bezos on his own feed.
  • Sanchez, who serves as vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, said that she and Bezos are creating the Maui Fund “to help Maui get back on its feet now and over the coming years.”
  • At least 55 people have been confirmed killed by the fires which destroyed the historic town of Lahaina in one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history. The search for victims is ongoing. 
  • The New York Times reported that Bezos purchased a 14-acre estate on La Perouse Bay for an estimated $78 million last year. The bay is less than 20 miles south of fires in South Maui.
