In February, a New York woman made headlines as the third person to apparently be completely cured of HIV. She had received an umbilical cord blood transplant for leukemia, an approach being tested in a new clinical trial launched by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The ten patients in the multi-center trial will be transplanted with donor cells containing a rare mutation that blocks HIV infection, similar to the New York patient and two other patients previously cured of HIV using bone marrow transplants. Fred Hutch transplant physicians Filippo Milano and Hans-Peter Kiem are leading the trial.
