After a year in which most moviegoers had to avoid theaters and catch films at home, streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon cleaned up Monday in nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards.

Big year for Amazon: Amazon Studios scored 12 nominations, including six for “Sound of Metal,” the story of a heavy metal drummer who loses his hearing. The film was nominated for best picture and star Riz Ahmed earned a best actor nod. The studio’s “One Night in Miami” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” also got multiple nods. Amazon received one nomination last year, in the foreign film category. Amazon won three Oscars in 2017 — a first for a streaming service.

Leading the pack: Netflix scored 35 nominations to lead all studios. David Fincher’s “Mank,” a behind-the-scenes drama about the making of “Citizen Kane,” had 10 nominations to best every other film. Netflix outpaced its showing last year in which it lead all studios with 24 nominations.

Pandemic impact: With big-picture releases delayed by the closure of theaters, streaming services stepped in to fill the void. Apple TV+ and Disney+ both earned their first Oscar nominations. “Nomadland,” which is currently airing on Hulu and in some theaters, is considered a leading contender for the best picture prize.

Tune in: The Oscars air Sunday, April 25, at 5 p.m. PT on ABC.
