Sprint is shutting down its prepaid Virgin Mobile USA phone business and moving customers over to sister brand Boost Mobile.

  • As part of the merger with T-Mobile, Sprint agreed to sell off its subsidiaries Virgin and Boost to Dish Network. Combining the two brands simplifies that process.
  • Virgin Mobile users were notified about the change this month, which will take place in early February.
  • A two-week trial over a lawsuit from a coalition of state attorneys general seeking to block the T-Mobile-Sprint merger wrapped up last month, and lawyers from both sides are scheduled to deliver closing arguments on the case next week. It is one of the last remaining hurdles in the review process, but it is an important one. An analyst recently put T-Mobile and Sprint’s odds of winning at just 40 percent.
