Later this year, drivers will be able to pay for gas at more than 11,500 Exxon and Mobil stations across the nation with an Amazon Alexa voice command.
It’s one of several auto-related capabilities announced by Amazon at the big CES event in Las Vegas this morning, a sign that the tech giant views cars as the next major vehicle for putting Alexa everywhere.
Users can access the feature through Alexa-connected vehicles, smartphones or other Alexa devices. It will go live in April, powered by global financial services tech company Fiserv. After asking Alexa to pay for gas, users will be directed to confirm station location and pump number, according to CNN. Then, the transaction will be processed through Amazon Pay.
Here are the other automotive-related announcements Amazon made today:
- Amazon is bringing its Fire TV media streaming devices to cars for the first time, via new partnerships with BMW and Fiat Chrysler Automotive. The move is part of a broader expansion of the Fire TV Edition program.
- Echo Auto, a $50 device that connects to the Alexa smartphone app and plays through car speakers, will be released in India on January 15, and launch in Europe in late February.
- Amazon Web Services is working with BlackBerry to build a cloud-powered connected vehicle software platform for in-vehicle applications. AWS is also working with Unity Technologies on a new cloud service to “test, train,and validate an autonomous perception system.”
- At CES, Amazon, Cadillac and ZeroLight will show off a new streamlined, technology-focused car-buying concept featuring the Cadillac XT6.
- Rivian, the Amazon-backed electric vehicle maker, will integrate Alexa into its first two all-electric vehicles: the R1S and R1T. The digital assistant will also be built into the fleet of 100,000 electric delivery vans Rivian is making for Amazon.
- Automobili Lamborghini is bringing Alexa to its Huracan EVO range vehicles.
